From colonial settlement to modern coastal town

1830

French Conquest

The French invasion of Algeria begins, marking the start of 132 years of colonial occupation.

1853

Foundation of Ain Taya

By decree of September 30, Ain Taya is established as a population center with 60 households and over 1,000 hectares of fertile agricultural land.

1870

Full Commune Status

Ain Taya is elevated to a full commune, with a population of 1,666 including 549 French settlers.

1914

Railway Connection

A narrow-gauge railway connects Ain Taya to Algiers, with three daily departures making the 32km journey.

1962

Algerian Independence

Algeria gains independence from France. Ain Taya becomes part of the newly sovereign nation.
